Glimpse Beyond - A Look at D&D's Upcoming Releases

Dungeons and Dragons is an evolving game to quote the creators who spoke on the last D&D Celebration. It's hard to be excited for releases coming in three year's time, but we have been told a lot of news on what to expect for the future of Dungeons and Dragons.

The full panel is well over eight hours long, but the final segment is what details the future of D&D and we can expect releases coming in the start of the next year, and many exciting things coming throughout 2022, with the biggest announcement coming in 2024.

Glimpse the Future

We have been told by the powers that be to expect books set in two different Dungeons and Dragons settings coming in 2022. We haven't been told where we are going, but the rumour mills are spinning. My personal pick is definitely Dragonlance. With the upcoming release of Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, we can expect some good Dragonlance coming soon. After that, it'd be anyone's guess, and it'll be exciting to see what comes.

At the opening of 2022, the 'Rules Expansion Gift Set' is coming. They had hoped for a holiday season release, but certain obvious circumstances prevented that. Instead, opening the year with a new release is a great way to get past January Blues. The set will include reprints of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything. It will also feature a new book titled Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse. This title is a collection of new, 'setting agnostic' creature stat blocks to be used in any world. Many fans, myself included, are wondering if this book will be sold separately, as it currently doesn't appear that it does. This is a missed opportunity at best, or a cynical sales angle at worst. I sincerely hope this book for the people (including myself) who want it.

The anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons is coming in 2024. To celebrate, the game we all know and love is going through a major evolution. They say this will change the game greatly, but the new coming changes will all be compatible with the 5th Edition we all know and love. This sounds similar to me to the changes that turned Third Edition into 3.5 – widely regarded as the best edition. For the play styles I keep with my tables, I will end up cherry picking the best bits to shape my games in bigger, stronger ways. Exciting to say the very least.

Now we want to hear from you. Are you hoping for Mordenkainen's on its own, or will you get the whole set? What new features and game mechanics are coming in 5.5 Edition? Let us know in our discord server or in the comments below.
